In high school I was told that embryos had hearts the size of poppy seeds, which meant that they had souls and that you shouldn’t abort them.

It didn’t make me any less likely to want to get an abortion, but whenever I eat a poppy seed muffin, I automatically imagine that I’m eating hundreds of embryo hearts.

Lynda Barry, What It Is
Lynda Barry is a genius, straight up. There is something so inspiring about an artist/writer admitting that there is an emotional investment in producing work, that we censor ourselves, and that we are not always art zombies. She’s amazing.

Kentucky Tea Party Sells ‘Yup, I’m A Racist’ Fourth of July T-Shirts →

OH YEEHAW THA FORF OF JULY, time for the awful racist slobs of Lexington, Kentucky to put on their best “warding off the coloreds and the Muslins” finery in honor of Jesus, Hitler and Thomas Jefferson. Do you like seeing the hate-bomb that is puking all over the American flag, on this man’s t-shirt? Does it capture your patriotic spirit? He will sell you another, to wear to the parade!  This is how serious the birth control situation is in Kentucky, because broken condoms result in tragedies like this man, selling apparel to people who want to honor America’s founding dressed like hobo Klansmen. Were there even other tragic people interested in buying from him, or was his booth FOR SOME UNIMAGINABLE REASON labeled “Tea Party Fox News” on the front? SEE THE ANSWER after the jump:

Yes, the brown “INFIDEL” t-shirts read, “Everything I Need to Know About Islam I Learned on 9/11,” which is why they are calling themselves “infidels,” for irony.

So anyway the moral of the story is we are sorry for whoever lives in Lexington, Kentucky.

I’m getting really tired of this “haha those people in the South are so racist/uneducated/white trash/hillbillies/hicks/etc.” as if the majority of people in urban/suburban Liberal White Educated America weren’t just as racist.  Yeah, I didn’t like living in Kentucky, and maybe I just have this perspective because I’m out of there, but I’m not ashamed of it.  It’s a place, and there are horrible people in all places.  I’m not defending racism; I just wish that people could discuss racism in a way that does not involve the attitude of, “Look at all these low-class people being racist.  It’s a good thing that I’m not like that,” because all this attitude does is further push internalized and institutionalized forms of racism out of people’s minds (and how this intersects with social class) and promotes the idea that as long as you’re not explicitly horrible, you’re not being a racist/promoting racist ideas/perpetuating a racist society.

(Same goes with the whole gay marriage in North Carolina thing.)

I feel kind of ridiculous for being upset about stores/restaurants/cafes closing (ear x-tacy, Cherry Bomb, Turtle Blossom!, The Makery, Ray’s Monkey House), but I am.

(Also, I had lots of gift card money to Cherry Bomb and would have told my mom to spend it all if I had known they were closing.)

There was a limited amount of public places in Louisville where I just liked to be in, and this has diminished a lot recently.

Is Heine Bros next?
